Support the Ormond Memorial Fundby Bruce A. Wolfson '71

"What is the use of living, if it be not to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?”

Gregg Ormond understood and embraced Winston Churchill’s prescription for living a meaningful life. In fact, he embodied it.  He lived his too-short life in the passionate pursuit of noble causes and has left the world a far better place.

Nowhere was Gregg’s passion for noble causes and making the world a better place more evident than in his tireless work to ensure that future generations of Penn Pikes would have access to our innovative Pike University leadership training programs. He warned that his generation, which has underwritten undergraduate attendance for years, would not be around forever.  How ironic that he should be among the first to go.

Gregg dreamt of creating a $250,000 endowment to fund these programs in perpetuity. Through his efforts, we are about half way there. We have already had 16 Beta Pi brothers step up in support of funding the chapter’s ongoing participation in PIKE University, including one $50,000 donor, two $25,000 donors and two $20,000 donors.  These men have set the stage for the successful realization of Gregg’s dream.  What better way to honor his memory and enhance his legacy than to finish the job?

To that end, I am pleased to announce that, at Beta Pi’s Founders’ Day dinner on March 28, 2015, the Gregg J. Ormond Memorial Fund will be launched.   The Fund will be created within Gregg’s beloved Beta Pi Endowment, and the revenues generated by the Fund will be awarded to Beta Pi leaders to enable them to attend Pike University events.  Each award will be designated a Gregg J. Ormond Leadership Award, assuring that his name will live in perpetuity.  If you have not yet made a donation to the Beta Pi Endowment, this is the perfect time to do it.  If you have already donated, an additional donation in Gregg’s honor would be a fitting tribute.

Even more than his dedication to the Beta Pi Endowment, Gregg loved sharing his passion for his fraternity with his son, Gregg, Jr., bringing him to countless conventions, Pike University events and founders’ days.  Pi Kappa Alpha became an important part of young Gregg’s life and he became a beloved figure in Pi Kappa Alpha.  Those ties will not end with Gregg’s passing.  In conjunction with our Founders’ Day celebration, Gregg J. Ormond, Jr. will be initiated into the bonds of Pi Kappa Alpha, joining his father as a brother of Beta Pi Chapter.

As you can see, Founders’ Day will be a very special event this year.  I hope that you can make it.  Whether or not you can be there in person, please join with me and many others in fulfilling Gregg’s dream and ensuring his legacy by making a contribution to the Gregg J. Ormond Memorial Fund.  Gifts of all sizes are important, whether it be $10,000, $1,000, $500, $250, or any other amount that fits your personal financial position.  If you prefer, you can make a pledge, payable over five years.  I hope you take this opportunity to honor a man who meant so much to Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Pi Chapter and to countless individual Pikes.

A donation form is available to download at the end of this article.  Please complete and mail it to the Foundation, or make a contribution online by following the easy steps at the bottom of the donation form.  All contributions to this fund are tax deductible.  Donors will be recognized on a plaque in the Beta Pi chapter house, in a future Shield & Diamond issue and in the Foundation’s annual report.

Although this will be an ongoing campaign, it is important to have a substantial amount already committed before the formal launch of the Gregg J. Ormond Memorial Fund at Founders’ Day, March 28, 2015. Please act now to make that happen.

If you are willing to donate some of your time to help make this campaign a success, please email me at bawolfson@me.com.  Thanks!
