SCOTT MACKLER 5K RUN/WALK IS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 3, 2024

The annual Scott Mackler MD PhD Memorial 5K run/walk (Mackler 5K) will take place at Temple Beth El in Newark, Delaware, on Sunday, November 3, 2024. The event was created by Harvey Mackler, Beta Pi ’72, and the Mackler family, to honor the legacy of Scott Mackler, Beta Pi ’77. All donations received are for the benefit of ALS United Mid-Atlantic (ALS Philadelphia). It was previously known as the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia. The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD, Assistive Technology Program provides people with ALS the ability to access assistive technology devices and services that are often not covered by insurance policies. Additionally, the program ensures that assistive technology services are an integral part of ALS Philadelphia clinics and centers certified by The ALS Association.

Scott Mackler, Beta Pi ’77, a medical doctor and brilliant scientist, contracted ALS while doing research at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine to find a cure for cocaine addiction. He valiantly fought the effects of ALS for many years. During this time, he was able to continue his employment due to the existence of advanced technology that provided the tools and devices that enabled him to continue his research. Prior to his unfortunate demise, Scott was featured on the 60 Minutes television program highlighting the technical advances that had been made to ease the pain, discomfort, and inability to communicate for people living with ALS, a highly debilitating disease.

Scott Mackler was an inspiration to victims of ALS and to ALS Philadelphia. ALS Philadelphia relayed this message to their supporters about Scott:

“Scott was a forerunner in Assistive Technology, having been one of the few who pioneered the use of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology. He believed that communicating effectively would vastly improve the quality of life for all those living with ALS and give them increased independence. Just as importantly, Scott was a loving father, brother, colleague, athlete and friend. And a believer who ‘always looked on the bright side of life.’ Your contributions honor his unique legacy.”

The “Race Against ALS” is now in its’ 24th year. Scott’s sons, Alexander and Noah, have enthusiastically and successfully assumed management of the event. Over the years, nearly $3,000,000 has been raised by the Mackler 5K. Harvey and Scott’s sons ensure that every dollar raised is given to ALS Philadelphia.
