PUBLIC SERVICE

The brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha have a long and distinguished history, evidencing a strong commitment to charity and social awareness, of charitable fund-raising and public service to the community and the University of Pennsylvania.

The February 25, 1986, issue of The Daily Pennsylvanian published an article praising the results of the 1986 Annual Giving campaign to benefit the University of Pennsylvania. Donations, solicited by telephone from Penn alumni by Penn undergraduates, are used by the Penn administration, at its discretion, for financial aid, scholarships, and operating expenses. This year, the campaign was led by a Beta Pi member.

Andrew Gold, Beta Pi ’85, Interfraternity Council Executive Secretary, acted as an Annual Giving Co-Chairman and was quoted extensively in the article. The “telethon” was conducted every evening from February 10-20, 1986. Stating that he was encouraged by the extent of cooperation from Penn fraternities, sororities, and other campus groups, he was also impressed by the $225,000 in total contributions pledged over that period. The fundraiser was considered a huge success. “We broke records for dollars and donors.” This represented an increase of 1200 donors and raised $55,000 more than the amount collected during the 1985 campaign.

In conclusion, brother Gold said, “In the end, the competition between the fraternities was very strong.” Amongst the fraternities, Pi Kappa Alpha solicited the most donations. Overall, he opined “It’s showing the University that we are not just here for fun and games.”
