The Mackler 5K carries forth the legacy of Scott Mackler, Beta Pi ’77, whose untimely death due to ALS was a devastating blow to his family and generated heartfelt grief to his fraternity brothers. Prior to a diagnosis of ALS, Scott lived a full life as an athlete, family man, and a brilliant scientist.

Begun by Scott’s brother, Harvey Mackler, Beta Pi ’72, the Mackler 5K is in its 25th year. Harvey managed the event for many years but has handed over the reins to Scott’s children. To date, the Mackler 5K has raised more than $2.5 million, providing the assistive devices for ALS sufferers. Scott’s pioneering usage this technology was featured in 2008 on the long-running CBS program 60 Minutes.

The Assistive Technology Program provides sufferers of ALS access to the devices that can restore the ability to communicate and mobility even when there is no insurance. The sophistication and efficacy of these devices are so advanced that Scott was able to actively continue his employment at the University of Pennsylvania as a researcher in the field of substance abuse until his death.

Your donations honor the work that Harvey and Scott’s family has done for the past 25 years by providing life-changing and sometimes lifesaving equipment and devices to so many victims of ALS.
